Despite the promise of an epic sky-faring adventure, there’s no actual exploration here. Like many other mobile titles, each chapter of the game consists purely of a bit of visual novel storytelling and a few waves of enemies to fight through. Granblue Fantasy calls back to the original Final Fantasy with simplistic battles that see teams of four characters (plus two in reserve) squaring off against enemies in turn-based battles. In addition, the text for new updates sometimes takes a while to actually be translated, but the translation is serviceable and it’s easy enough to just download and play the Japanese app. Perhaps it’s because the current English version is a little wonky, with some stilted dialogue and fair chunk of Japanese text left untranslated. ![]() With its domestic success, it’s no surprise that it has finally seen an English release, although strangely this is limited to an official translation patch with no actual international version. Granblue Fantasy has become a huge hit over in Japan with several million downloads and a regular spot on the list of highest grossing games on the iOS App Store. Except it’s not really it’s just Nobuo Uematsu composing a bunch of songs and some (admittedly nice) art by former Final Fantasy art director Hideo Mineba. Though the marketplace for mobile RPGs might be overcrowded, there aren’t many free-to-play games that are advertised by bringing a friggin’ airship to the Tokyo Game Show! Granblue Fantasy is the next in a long line of games sold on the prospect of the team behind the Final Fantasy series getting back together to make a new title that captures the spirit of classic JRPGs. There was a lot of buzz behind Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy. ![]()
